Striving to continuously improve is a not a sign that something is broken with an organization’s existing processes. Seeking to continuously improve its processes is a sign of organizational maturity.
The MSU Way: ECOS is a project undertaken with a spirit of continuous improvement. This effort is consistent with President Simon’s “Bolder by Design” (PDF) initiative, with a new emphasis on creating a high-preformance culture in both service and academic units at the university.
MSU exists to educate students, communities (local, state-wide, regional, national, and international), and advance knowledge. Students are the first customers the different campus organizations (administrative and academic) serve. Students are on campus learning in classrooms, conducting research with faculty and also participating in a myriad of daily campus operations.
The campus will cease to exist without them.
The competition to attract students to institutions of higher education is on the rise and ever changing. MSU employees, staff and faculty have to make sure that anything and everything the MSU campus has to offer to students is the best in its class. The goal is to have students join MSU because of the spectacular campus experience and superior academic programs consequential to their futures.
The academic side of MSU is launching initiatives towards this excellence. The MSU Way ECOS is the endeavor MSU’s operations and services side will undertake to reach the highest level of excellence in service.
Consider the following overarching goal for the MSU Way ECOS project: That one day in the next 10 years, students will say that they came to East Lansing because of MSU’s unmatched excellence in service and academics!
