The MSU Way: Excellence in Campus Operations and Services

Infrastructure Planning and Facilities, in conjunction with several other campus partners such as Residential and Hospitality Services, IT Services, MSU Police, Facilities Planning and Space Management, Environmental Safety and Health, and MSU Purchasing, are partnering to develop and deploy an initiative that is presently called "The MSU Way: Excellence in Campus Operations and Services (ECOS)."

The focus of the effort is on all operations and services that Infrastructure Planning and Facilities and all sister units provide to campus clients. "The MSU Way," as it is being described now, is the method of delivery all partners would agree to follow to consistently and collaboratively exceed our customers' expectations while using MSU's resources as efficiently as possible.

Broadly defined, the aims of The MSU Way: ECOS project are as follows:

  • Focus on investigating opportunities for improvement in how the Physical Plant interacts with divisions on campus;
  • Identify and eliminate duplications in operations and service processes;
  • Streamline existing operations and service processes and develop new ones if needed.

This website will serve as a central hub of information so any interested parties from all participating units and beyond can keep up to date on the initiative's progress and offer feedback every step of the way. Thank you for visiting and please visit often to catch the latest updates.

Key messages:

  • The MSU Way involves all the partner units engaged in operations and services to campus clients (students, staff and faculty). It is about establishing/sharpening a university-level method and adjusting individual units if necessary to support it.
  • Infrastructure Planning and Facilities is one component of The MSU Way.
  • The MSU Way may — or may not — result in a change in how Infrastructure Planning and Facilities operates.
  • The goal is to proactively look at our operations and to suggest improvements from within, versus potentially the opposite approach.
  • The MSU Way: ECOS project has no pre-determined agenda or end result. The Steering Committee and the Core Group, representing a wide cross section of the MSU entities responsible for operations and service on campus, will develop what will be accomplished and how.
