The Physical Plant Division provides and maintains the physical environment for education, research and public service at Michigan State University. Our responsibility is immense and varied: MSU includes 561 buildings, 2,023 acres of park, more than 100 miles of pathways, approximately 67 lane-miles of roadway and 25,000 parking spaces.

In an effort to Be Spartan Green, employees at the Physical Plant are finding more efficient ways to get to work. Ride-sharing to and from work has become a normal part of the work week for several Phys Planters.


MSU’s Green Certification program is designed to recognize, assist and promote unites that are taking steps toward reducing their environmental footprint. Units demonstrate their commitment through initiatives for communication and education, energy efficiency and conservation, waste reduction and recycling, water conservation, and procurement.
